MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day is a blessing in our American heritage. Have you wondered how we came to enjoy it as a traditional day of honor? Historians tell us that Anna M. Jarvis is its founder. May 9, 1907, Anna invited friends to her home in Philadelphia to commemorate the death of her mother. Her mother had died some one or two years previously. At the gathering, Anna announced her plans to make Mother’s Day a national observance on the second Sunday of May. She wrote editors, preachers, presidents, governors and others of influence to make the day a part of our American tradition. In 1910, Governor William E. Glasscock of West Virginia, officially proclaimed the first Mother’s Day. America has some good traditions and surely this is one of them.

THANKS

I want to take the opportunity to say a special thanks to all mothers here today. I am thankful and glad that there is a day in the year that all of us can be reminded of your great role in life. Next to God’s love, I have often wondered if there is anything greater and stronger than a mother’s love for her children. One of the last people that Jesus thought about and spoke about before His death was His mother. Concerning a good mother, the Bible says, “Her children arise up and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praises her.”

IS MOTHER

The one whose work is never through, Whose love is ever strong and true,
Is Mother.
The one who sleeps with waking eye, And listens for the faintest sigh,
Is Mother.
The one who washes off the dirt, And heals with kisses, every hurt,
Is Mother.
Though age puts wrinkles in her face, There’s beauty time cannot erase,
Is Mother.
Of all the human names of earth we hear, The one that seems to be most dear,
Is Mother.

LORD SAYS

The Lord wants us to know the greatness and goodness of a worthy woman and mother. Think about the description in Proverbs 31:10-31.

  • She is special in worth - v. 10
  • She can be trusted - v.11
  • She is a willing worker - v. 13
  • She prepares good meals for her family - v. 14
  • She is considerate of others—v. 20
  • She sees that her family is well dressed - v. 21
  • She is beautiful and is a person of wisdom—vv. 22,26
  • She is blessed and praised by her family—v. 28
  • She loves the Lord and is known by her good works - vv. 30-31

There are many ways to honor your mother, but I can tell you one and that is for you to be in the assembly of worship on the First Day of the Week. Good mothers want their children to be blessed. May the Lord bless all the dear mothers. Let us all worship and praise the Lord.
